A 1985 Volkswagen GTI modified with a period Callaway Turbo conversion and a BBS body kit is being offered at no reserve in North Carolina as part of the Tons Of Gas Auto Collection. The car, finished in Mars Red over patterned cloth, represents a rare example of the Mk2 GTI enhanced by one of the most respected tuners of the 1980s.
The Callaway Turbo conversion transforms the standard 1.8-litre inline-four, which drives the front wheels through a five-speed manual transaxle. A hood scoop feeds the intercooler, while a custom exhaust system with a resonator and Dynomax muffler has been fitted. In place of the factory stereo, the cabin houses a Callaway VDO boost gauge and a hard-wired radar detector, underlining the car's performance-focused specification.
Exterior details include the BBS body kit, a sunroof, flush headlights, red-stripe accents and a rear window wiper. The seller states the car was repainted in 2026. It rides on redrilled three-piece 15-inch BBS RS wheels mounted with Toyo tyres, and is equipped with coilover suspension. Braking is handled by power-assisted four-wheel discs, with the brake fluid flushed in July 2026 and a rear wheel bearing kit installed in January 2019.
Inside, the GTI features sport seats with patterned accents, air conditioning and a BBS-logo shift knob. A Lecarra steering wheel fronts the stock instrument cluster, which includes an integrated trip computer. The aftermarket stereo is inoperative. The six-digit odometer shows 35,000 miles, approximately 200 of which have been added under current ownership since the seller purchased the car in 2018.
Service history is extensive. In January 2019, work included an oil and filter change, timing-belt service, water-pump and valve-cover gaskets, fuel filter, coolant-temperature sensor, timing-belt kit with tensioner, spark plugs, ignition wires, distributor cap and rotor, thermostat, water pump, battery and fuel-pump check valve. Fuel-system components including the in-tank fuel pump, accumulator and pump housing were replaced in March 2024. In July 2026, following a fuel leak, the fuel system was serviced with a new fuel distributor, fuel injectors and fuel-pump intake, along with spark plugs and engine oil.
The car is offered with a Callaway Turbo certificate and records. A Carfax report is free of accidents or other reported damage, though at least one open recall is noted. The Montana title carries an actual mileage notation. The GTI is part of the Tons Of Gas Auto Collection and is available at no reserve, meaning it will sell to the highest bidder regardless of price.
