Jaguar will reveal the Type 01, a 1000bhp-plus electric grand tourer, in New York, marking the start of the British marque's reinvention as a luxury EV brand.

Jaguar is set to unveil the Type 01, the electric grand tourer that begins the British marque's reinvention as a luxury EV maker, at an event in New York. The production version of the 1000bhp-plus GT breaks cover almost two years after the concept car that previewed it, and it arrives as the first Jaguar of a new era.
The Type 01 will come to market in the first half of 2027, ending a hiatus in new Jaguar production that began with the retirement of the F-Pace SUV in December. Prices are expected to range from around £120,000 to more than £150,000 for high-spec, heavily personalised examples. That window pitches the car between mainstream premium marques such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz and top-drawer luxury contenders including Bentley and Aston Martin.
Jaguar has already shown the interior, which bears a strong resemblance to the concept. It is divided into four sections by a central spine and is minimalist in its detailing. The car also lacks a rear window, using a camera instead, similar to the system on the Polestar 4.
The decision to reveal the car in the United States, following the concept's unveiling in Miami last year, shows that JLR still regards America as a key market for the model. That is despite the country's rollback of emissions legislation and criticism from some commentators over the brand's relaunch.
Speaking at the company's investor day on 17 June, JLR chief commercial officer Leonard Hoornik said the car would be launched «in a very, very special way». JLR has repeatedly said it intends to keep Jaguar electric, even after deciding to offer hybrid alternatives on its previously EV-only EMA platform, which will underpin replacements for models such as the Range Rover Evoque and Range Rover Velar.
«The reason we're saying that is because the kind of performance attributes we want Jaguar to perform against can be delivered only through an electric drivetrain,» JLR chief executive PB Balaji said at the investor day.
The Type 01 name carries three significant elements, according to the company. The Type prefix emphasises the car's place in a succession of legendary predecessors stretching back to the C-Type racer that won at Le Mans in 1951 and continuing through the D-Type, E-Type and F-Type. Each of those cars was celebrated for blending an engaging drive with deep reserves of power, plus refinement and composure, attributes Jaguar aims to share. The 0 represents the zero-emissions powertrain, while the 1 denotes its status as the first Jaguar of a new era.
The car was previously known as the Type 00, after the preceding concept, or X900, its internal codename, before the Type 01 name was confirmed for showrooms. Further models have yet to be officially confirmed, but a large limousine and an SUV are expected to be the next cars to use Jaguar's bespoke new JEA architecture, and they could take the Type 02 and Type 03 names into production.
The Type 01 represents the most visible step in Jaguar's complete rebranding and repositioning as a purveyor of exclusive, luxury-oriented EVs priced well above the relatively mainstream models that made up its most recent line-up. For a marque with a long racing and sports-car heritage, the new car is intended to carry those associations into an electric future while competing in a more exclusive part of the market.
