Avatr Confirms European Launch With Eight Models Planned Over Three Years
Volkswagen has confirmed that a second-generation ID. Buzz electric Microbus will move to the company's new SSP architecture, bringing improvements across the board and addressing the model's high price.

Volkswagen has confirmed that the ID. Buzz, its electric reincarnation of the classic Microbus, will enter a second generation built on an entirely new platform. The German manufacturer says the next model will bring improvements across the board, with the most significant change being a lower price that tackles the electric van's biggest criticism.
The second-generation ID. Buzz will utilise Volkswagen's brand-new SSP architecture, a platform that will underpin a wide range of future electric vehicles across the group's brands. The move represents a substantial technical shift for the model, which currently shares its underpinnings with other electric vehicles in the Volkswagen range.
The current ID. Buzz has been praised for its retro-inspired design and spacious electric packaging, but its premium pricing has limited its appeal against cheaper alternatives in the electric van and MPV segment. Volkswagen's decision to move the model to the SSP platform is expected to reduce production complexity and costs, allowing the company to position the next-generation model more competitively.
The SSP architecture is described as groundbreaking by the company, and it is intended to support higher levels of technology, improved efficiency and greater scalability than the platforms it replaces. For the ID. Buzz, that could mean better range, faster charging and more advanced driver assistance and infotainment systems, alongside the promised price reduction.
The confirmation of a second generation comes as Volkswagen continues to expand its electric line-up and restructure its manufacturing strategy around dedicated EV platforms. The ID. Buzz has been a halo model for the brand's electric ambitions, reviving a nameplate and silhouette that defined a generation of motoring culture.
Volkswagen has not yet announced a launch date or detailed pricing for the next-generation ID. Buzz. The company has also not confirmed which markets will receive the new model first or whether the range will continue to include passenger and cargo variants. Further technical details are expected to be released closer to the vehicle's debut.
The original ID. Buzz marked Volkswagen's return to the microbus format after decades, translating the iconic rear-engined, air-cooled original into a modern electric vehicle. While the model won design plaudits, its cost put it out of reach for many buyers who had been drawn to the idea of an affordable, practical electric family van.
By moving to the SSP platform, Volkswagen is signalling that the next ID. Buzz will be a more commercially focused proposition. The architecture is central to the group's plan to standardise electric vehicle development and reduce costs across its brands, and the ID. Buzz is now confirmed as one of the models that will benefit.
The announcement gives potential buyers a clearer picture of Volkswagen's long-term commitment to the model. Rather than allowing the ID. Buzz to remain a niche, premium offering, the company intends to evolve it into a more accessible electric vehicle while retaining the character that made the original concept a favourite at motor shows and among enthusiasts.
Volkswagen's confirmation of a second-generation ID. Buzz on the SSP platform therefore sets up the model for its most important test yet: proving that the electric Microbus can be both desirable and affordable. The company has committed to improvements across the board, and the price is now firmly part of that promise.
