Honda has unveiled the 2027 Civic Type R, marking the first significant update to the US-market hot hatch in four years. The refreshed model brings a series of aerodynamic, chassis, and interior enhancements, but retains the same 315-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-litre engine. The price rises to $49,990 including destination, up from $48,690 for the 2026 model year.

The most visible change is a more aggressive front fascia with a larger grille opening and a deeper front splitter, which Honda says generates additional downforce. The suspension has also been retuned, specifically for the stiffer +R driving mode, to reduce bounce and impact harshness on rougher roads. A new yoke spring has been added to the brake pedal to suppress play in the linkage and improve pedal feel, while the rev-match software has been recalibrated for smoother downshifts.

Inside, the 2027 Type R gains three-stage heated sports seats for the first time, upholstered in a new perforated suede-effect material with black striping. The climate control knobs are now finished in black, and the shifter, door handles, and console trim are dark grey. Ultrasuede fabric now covers the upper door panels and the top of the gauge cluster, which Honda says reduces glare and reflections on the windscreen. A new Meteorite Gray Metallic paint option joins the palette.

On the technology front, the car now features Google built-in and Alexa built-in for the first time, along with two USB-C ports on the centre console above the wireless phone charger. Honda has also improved the lane-keeping assistance system and added post-collision braking. The engine, a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder producing 315 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque, is unchanged and continues to drive the front wheels through a limited-slip differential and a six-speed manual transmission. A new plastic engine cover designed to resemble a vintage Type R cam cover is the only visual change under the bonnet.

The updates come as the Civic Type R has been discontinued in Europe due to tightening emissions regulations, leaving the US as one of the few remaining markets for the model. The manual Civic Si has also been dropped from North American showrooms. Despite the price increase, the Type R remains a relative bargain in the hot hatch segment, with few direct rivals offering a similar combination of performance and practicality.

The 2027 Honda Civic Type R is expected to arrive at dealerships later this year. Honda says the changes are aimed at making the car more livable without compromising its track-focused character.
