1980 Porsche 911SC Targa Offered With Rebuilt Transaxle
A black-on-black 1980 Porsche 911SC Targa, owned since 2008 and maintained with a rebuilt five-speed transaxle and recent engine work, is offered for sale with spare parts and a clean California title.

A black-on-black 1980 Porsche 911SC Targa is being offered for sale, bringing to market a classic air-cooled 911 that has been in the same ownership since 2008 and benefits from a rebuilt five-speed manual transaxle. The car is powered by a 3.0-litre flat-six with Bosch fuel injection, factory rated at 172 horsepower and 189 lb-ft of torque, and is presented with spare parts and a clean California title in the seller’s name.
The Targa’s Type 915 five-speed manual transaxle was rebuilt in 2018, at which time the clutch assembly was replaced. Power is sent to the rear wheels through that gearbox. The engine has also received attention: in 2018 the camshaft oil lines, drive belts, air mass meter boot, catalytic converter, heater fan hose and valve covers were replaced, along with the fitting of an airbox pop-off valve. More recent work since 2022 includes a new alternator and muffler, while the oil pressure switch, oil thermostat O-ring and oil cooler gaskets were replaced in 2026.
Chassis upgrades include Bilstein rear dampers and a front strut tower brace, while stopping power comes from power-assisted four-wheel disc brakes with ventilated rotors. The car rides on 16-inch Fuchs wheels with black centres, fitted with Toyo Proxes tyres mounted in 2021. The exterior is finished in black with front and rear spoilers and is believed to have been refinished. Equipment includes a removable Targa roof panel, yellow-tinted headlights and fog lights, and dual side mirrors. The seller notes orange peel on the front fenders, along with paint chips, hood scratches, door sill wear and an inoperative rear window wiper.
Inside, the cabin features optional sport seats upholstered in black leather, Coco floor mats and power windows. A Bluetooth-capable Blaupunkt stereo is linked to aftermarket audio equipment mounted in the front trunk. The three-spoke Personal Grinta steering wheel frames a central tachometer with a 6,300-rpm redline, a replacement 150-mph speedometer, a clock and gauges for oil level, oil temperature, oil pressure and fuel level. The six-digit odometer shows 92,000 miles, approximately 32,000 of which were added under current ownership.
Noted faults include a non-functioning air conditioning system, whose compressor drive belt has been removed, a cracked dashboard and inoperative cruise control. The car is offered with spare parts. The 911SC Targa remains a sought-after model among enthusiasts for its blend of open-air motoring and classic 911 dynamics, and this example’s documented maintenance history and long-term ownership are likely to appeal to buyers seeking a usable air-cooled Porsche.
