GT350-Style 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback Heads to Auction in California
A restored and modified 1965 Ford Mustang fastback, built in the style of a Shelby GT350, is offered for sale in Palmdale, California, with a rebuilt 289 V8 and four-speed manual.

A 1965 Ford Mustang fastback that was refurbished and customised as a GT350-style build between 2006 and 2013 is being offered for sale in Palmdale, California. The car, acquired by the seller in 2025, is presented with service records and a Montana title held in the name of the seller's LLC.
The restoration was extensive. The body was placed on a rotisserie and refinished in Orange Sunset Pearl, then fitted with a Shelby-style hood, hood pins, black GT350-style stripes and side graphics, Cobra and GT350 badging, a left-side mirror, and a side-exit exhaust system. The underbody was refinished and undercoated during the same process. Records and images of the refurbishment are included in the gallery accompanying the listing.
Under the bonnet, the C-code 289ci V8 was rebuilt in 2009 by Southern Style Racing and has reportedly covered approximately 320 miles since completion. Modifications include a performance camshaft, a Shelby-style oil pan, an Edelbrock carburettor and intake manifold, Cobra-script valve covers, and MSD ignition. A Monte Carlo bar, export brace, and Painless wiring harness were also installed. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission and a Ford 9-inch rear axle with a 3.73:1 limited-slip differential. The seller states the transmission was rebuilt in 2009.
The chassis and running gear were similarly upgraded. The suspension was rebuilt with refinished components, and Wilwood four-wheel disc brakes with drilled and slotted rotors were installed. Alloy 17-inch wheels are mounted with 225/60 tyres. Inside, the cabin features front bucket seats upholstered in black vinyl and a Shelby-style rear-seat delete panel. Vintage Air climate control and a CD stereo were fitted, though the seller notes the radio currently only produces static. A Shelby-style steering wheel is mounted to a Flaming River steering column and fronts a Classic Instruments gauge package with a 160-mph speedometer, fuel, voltage, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and clock readouts. A 10,000-rpm tachometer sits atop the dashboard.
The replacement odometer shows approximately 320 miles, around 100 of which were added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown and the odometer reading is listed as exempt. The car is titled using VIN 5F09C330753. The warranty tag is a replacement, and the fender VIN is covered by a Shelby-style tag stamped «Custom»; a photo showing the fender VIN underneath the removed tag is provided in the gallery.
The Mustang is part of a broader tradition of high-performance Ford Mustangs that have been modified for speed and style. The GT350-style build echoes the original Shelby Mustangs of the 1960s, which were developed for both road and track use.
