A large emergency response is under way in Newcastle city centre after several university buildings were evacuated and police set up a cordon, with reports linking the alert to a suspicious item.

Several buildings at Newcastle University have been evacuated and a large police cordon has been put in place in the city centre after an alert that prompted a major emergency response.
Police officers, firefighters and other emergency personnel were deployed to the university area, where a number of buildings were cleared and students and staff were told to leave. The cordon was set up across a wide section of the campus and surrounding streets, according to reports from the scene.
The evacuation is understood to be linked to the discovery of a suspicious item, though police have not yet confirmed the exact nature of the alert. The university has not issued a detailed statement on the cause of the evacuation, and no injuries have been reported.
Witnesses described a heavy presence of emergency vehicles and officers in the area as the operation got under way. Students were seen leaving buildings in an orderly fashion, with some gathering at assembly points away from the cordon while police worked to secure the scene.
The incident has caused significant disruption in the city centre, with roads near the campus affected by the police cordon. Members of the public have been advised to avoid the area while the emergency response continues.
Newcastle University is a major institution in the city, with thousands of students and staff based at its city-centre campus. The evacuation of multiple buildings is an unusual step and reflects the seriousness with which the authorities are treating the alert.
Police have not released further details about the item or the circumstances that led to the evacuation. It is not yet clear how long the cordon will remain in place or when the buildings will be reopened.
The emergency response is ongoing, and further updates are expected as police continue their investigation. Anyone in the area has been urged to follow instructions from officers and to stay clear of the cordon.
