Rapid Bucharest have unilaterally terminated the contract of Swiss goalkeeper Benjamin Siegrist after the 34-year-old repeatedly failed to report for training. The club said it had sent several notifications asking the player to return following the conclusion of his loan from Genoa, but he did not appear.

Under Romanian Football Federation (FRF) regulations, a club may break a player's contract if he does not attend training within 15 days of the first official notification. Siegrist's agreement with the Bucharest club was valid until 30 June 2028, making the termination a significant step for both parties.

The decision ends a difficult period for Rapid, who had expected the experienced goalkeeper to rejoin the squad after his loan spell in Italy. Instead, the club was forced to apply the regulatory route to release itself from the contract. The termination frees Rapid from a long-term financial commitment and allows the club to reshape its goalkeeping department ahead of the new season.

Siegrist, who has represented Switzerland at international level, joined Rapid with considerable pedigree from European football. His failure to report marks an abrupt end to his time in Bucharest, and the club's move signals a firm stance on player discipline. Rapid have not commented on whether they intend to pursue further action or compensation.

The case highlights the strict rules governing player contracts in Romanian football, where clubs are empowered to act decisively when players do not honour their obligations. For Rapid, the priority now shifts to securing a reliable replacement between the posts as they prepare for the competitive campaign ahead.
