1982 Ferrari 400i with V12 and automatic gearbox heads to auction
A European-market 1982 Ferrari 400i, finished in black over tan leather and powered by a fuel-injected 4.8-litre V12, is being offered for sale on dealer consignment in California.

A European-market 1982 Ferrari 400i is being offered for sale on dealer consignment in California, giving collectors the chance to acquire a grand tourer that pairs a fuel-injected V12 with the relaxed convenience of a three-speed automatic transmission. The car, finished in black over tan leather upholstery, was imported into the United States in January 1982 and has since changed hands twice on the online auction platform Bring a Trailer, most recently in July 2023.
The angular bodywork, designed by Pininfarina, was repainted in black under previous ownership and features pop-up headlights, bright window trim, and quad exhaust outlets. The seller notes cracked paint near the base of the windshield and chipped paint on the front of the car. The 415mm five-spoke alloy wheels have been refinished and are fitted with 240/55 Michelin TRX tires, while four-wheel disc brakes were standard equipment for the model.
Inside, the front bucket seats and individual rear seats are trimmed in tan leather, with black leather covering the dashboard and centre console. Appointments include power windows and mirrors, wood trim, front and rear air conditioning, and a ZZ2 Mpplay infotainment unit with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The three-spoke steering wheel frames Veglia Borletti instrumentation comprising a 180-mph speedometer, a tachometer with a 6,500-rpm redline, and gauges for oil pressure and coolant temperature. A clock and additional gauges for fuel level, oil temperature, and amperage sit in the centre of the dashboard.
Under the bonnet sits a 4.8-litre DOHC V12 with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection, factory rated at 306 horsepower. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a General Motors-sourced Turbo Hydramatic three-speed automatic transmission, a combination that made the 400i a comfortable long-distance cruiser rather than a sharp-edged sports car. The five-digit odometer shows 53,000 miles, approximately 1,200 of which were added under current ownership.
Work carried out under previous ownership included refinishing the wheels and front seats, repairing the dashboard leather, and replacing the fuel lines. The Carfax report is free of accident or damage entries. However, the car failed its most recent California emissions inspection in July 2026 and was designated a Gross Polluter, a factor prospective buyers will need to weigh when considering registration and road use in the state.
The 400i is offered by WOB Cars, a BaT Local Partner in California, and comes with an owner’s manual, spare parts, a clean Carfax report, and a Montana title. For enthusiasts of the era, this example represents the final chapter of Ferrari’s front-engined V12 grand tourers before the model line gave way to the more overtly sporting 412, and it offers the distinctive combination of Italian coachbuilding, a twelve-cylinder engine, and shift-free motoring that remains rare in the marque’s modern catalogue.
