A 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T coupe, one of only 847 examples built with the 440ci V8 and a four-speed manual transmission, is being offered for sale after a lengthy restoration. The car is powered by the engine's three two-barrel Holley carburetors, the setup known as the Six Pack, and has covered just 15,000 miles.
The car is one of 1,640 Challenger R/T coupes built with the 440ci V8 that year. A rotisserie refurbishment carried out in North Carolina between 2007 and 2009, following a long period in storage, saw the vehicle repainted in black and its white vinyl interior refreshed. The Dana 60 rear axle was replaced, and the engine was rebuilt with a stroker kit, a flat-tappet camshaft and aftermarket lifters. The transmission, rear end and other systems were also overhauled.
Mechanical updates include a Hughes Engines flat-tappet hydraulic camshaft, Hy-lift Johnson lifters and Hughes valve springs, along with new fuel lines, cast-iron exhaust manifolds and an exhaust system. Power reaches the rear wheels through the four-speed manual and a Sure-Grip limited-slip differential, both rebuilt in 2007, and a McLeod Racing 18-spline clutch is fitted. Braking is by unassisted drums at all four corners, and the brakes and suspension were overhauled in the late 2000s.
Finished from the factory in Black (TX9), the car has white longitudinal stripes along the body sides, a white vinyl roof, quad headlights, R/T badging and a Rallye hood with «440 Six Pack» markings. It rides on Rallye 15-inch wheels fitted with F60–15 Goodyear Polyglas GT tyres. Inside, the front bucket seats and rear bench were retrimmed in white vinyl, the dashboard pad was restored, and the seatbelts were rebuilt and rewebbed. Equipment includes a Hurst pistol-grip shifter, woodgrain trim, a Chrysler Solid State AM radio and Rallye gauges.
The current owner bought the car in 2011, and it is offered by the seller on the owner's behalf. The sale package includes refurbishment records, three pages of judging sheets from the 2010 Mopar Nationals, on which the car scored 419 out of 442 possible points, a copy of the previous owner's Ohio title, part of the original build sheet and a Washington title in the owner's name. The seller notes that some of the deductions noted on the judging sheets have since been corrected. The Washington title records an odometer status of «Exempt».
