S62-Powered 2001 BMW 740i Sport with Six-Speed Manual Heads to Auction
A 2001 BMW 740i Sport fitted with a 4.9-litre S62 V8 and six-speed manual transmission from an E39 M5 is offered for sale, with recent mechanical and cosmetic work completed in 2025.

A 2001 BMW 740i Sport that has been extensively modified with a 4.9-litre S62 V8 engine and a six-speed manual transmission sourced from an E39 M5 is now offered for sale. The car, finished in Imola Red over Black Montana leather, represents a rare enthusiast build that combines the E38 7 Series chassis with the drivetrain from BMW's celebrated M5.
The engine, transmission, driveshaft and rear differential were reportedly sourced from a donor E39 M5 that had covered approximately 121,000 miles before the swap was carried out in 2017. Work in March 2025 included replacing the VANOS solenoid pack O-rings, oil filter housing mount, oil level sensor and engine oil. The car last passed a California emissions test in August 2026.
The exterior features Shadowline trim, xenon headlights with washers, fog lights, tinted windows and a sunroof. The windshield mouldings and sunroof seal were replaced in 2025. The 18-inch M Parallel Style 37 alloy wheels were refinished the same year and are mounted with Michelin Pilot Sport 4s tyres showing 2024 date codes. The brake fluid was also flushed in 2025. A Carfax report lists an accident in 2005, and the seller states the front bumper was replaced as a result. The bumper and trunk lid have since been repainted.
Inside, the cabin is trimmed in Black Montana leather with heated power-adjustable contour sport front seats and heated rear seats. Equipment includes navigation, retrofitted Anthracite Birchwood trim, a CD stereo with a BlueBus Bluetooth module, Bavsound speakers, an illuminated shift knob, rear sunshades, cruise control and dual-zone automatic climate control. The right front and left rear window regulators were replaced and an Alcantara headliner was installed in 2025.
The leather-wrapped M Sport steering wheel frames a replacement instrument cluster sourced from the donor E39 M5, which includes a 185-mph speedometer, a tachometer with variable redline, and gauges for coolant temperature, oil temperature and fuel level. The digital odometer indicates 58,000 miles, approximately 7,000 of which were added by the selling dealer. The removed stock cluster is included in the sale and shows 120,000 miles. The seller states the chassis mileage is around 140,000 miles, and the Carfax report shows a potential odometer rollback.
The car is equipped with All-Season Traction Control, Dynamic Stability Control and a sport suspension. It is offered with a window sticker, owner's manual, recent service records and a clean California title in the seller's name. The original window sticker lists a total suggested retail price of $69,835.
