A 1985 Porsche 911 Carrera coupe that was rebuilt as a backdated RSR-style race car is being offered for sale in Pennsylvania. The car, which began life as a standard Carrera, was acquired as a bare shell by its current owner in 2008 and subsequently transformed into a dedicated competition machine with a roll cage, fibreglass bodywork and a modified 2.2-litre flat-six engine.
The build was carried out by Aircooled Racing, who fitted the roll cage in 2008 and assembled the engine. The bodywork was backdated to an earlier aesthetic, incorporating flared front fenders and doors from a 1969 912, flared rear fenders, and a fibreglass hood, decklid and RS-style bumpers. The car was repainted in green with a black stripe, and Lexan windows were installed along with early-style taillights, headlight and turn signal covers, rear window straps, tow hooks and aftermarket mirrors. The seller notes that a prior vent on the hood was removed and the area is wavy, while stone chips around the front and cracks on the fenders reflect the car's racing history.
Power comes from a 2.2-litre flat-six built around a 901/16 magnesium alloy case sourced from a 1969 911. The engine features dual Weber carburettors, a counterweighted 911S-style crankshaft, Biral AA cylinders bored to 84.25mm, Elgin Modified S camshafts, JE pistons with approximately 11.5:1 compression, MFI cylinder heads, Eibach valve springs and a Pertronix electronic ignition with an MSD 6AL controller. A front-mounted oil cooler with a Mocal thermostat, braided oil and fuel lines, and exhaust headers complete the setup. The top end was reportedly rebuilt in 2025, though the seller notes an oil leak from the case seam. An ATL 12-gallon fuel cell with a Holley pump and regulator feeds the engine.
Drive is sent to the rear wheels through a five-speed 901 manual transaxle with an OS Giken limited-slip differential installed in 2026. Axles were sourced from a 1971 911 and utilise 108mm CV joints. The seller notes that the transaxle is not synchronised into first gear and second gear is slightly notchy. The car rides on 15-inch Fuchs alloy wheels fitted with older Hoosier Racing Slicks measuring 215/580 at the front and 245/580 at the rear. The braking system features a dual master cylinder, A-type front calipers and ATE M-type rear calipers, with aluminium 15mm front spacers and extended wheel studs.
The suspension has been extensively modified. Up front, the car runs 21mm torsion bars, a one-inch sway bar, custom-valved Bilstein struts with raised spindles, Polybronze bushings and quick-change adjustable camber plates. At the rear, it features 24mm torsion bars, an 18mm sway bar, later-model aluminium trailing arms, Koni shocks and polyurethane bushings. Turbo tie rods with a Tarett Engineering adjustable bump steer kit have been added, and the drop links are adjustable heim joints all around.
Inside, the cabin houses a single Kirkey aluminium racing seat with harnesses that are out of date. A fire suppression system and kill switch are installed, along with a drilled aluminium gas pedal and floor board. A plastic dash cap has been added, and a JWest Rennshift shifter was installed in 2026. A battery is fitted in the passenger seat area. The three-spoke Sparco steering wheel is mounted on a quick release and frames an Autogage tachometer, an oil pressure and temperature combination gauge, a dual-bank exhaust gas temperature gauge and a readout for fuel pressure. There is no odometer, and total mileage is unknown.
The car was raced in the SCCA E Production class along with vintage events at New Jersey Motorsports Park, Pittsburgh International Raceway and Summit Point Motorsports Park through 2014. It is not legal for street use and does not have a title or registration. It is being offered on a bill of sale only, accompanied by spare wheels and tyres and an SCCA log book.
