The Indiana Fever are heavy favourites to extend their winning run when they face the Portland Fire at the Moda Center on Friday night, even though the build-up to the game has been dominated by off-court controversy and uncertainty over the availability of two key players.

Indiana arrive in Portland with an 18-10 record and have won eight of their last ten games, including four consecutive victories. Portland, by contrast, are 11-17 and have lost three straight games, with just three wins in their past ten outings. The teams have split their two meetings this season, with the home side winning and covering the spread on both occasions.

The Fever are listed as 7.5-point favourites and -325 on the moneyline at DraftKings, with a total of 187.5 points. However, the line has raised eyebrows because Indiana were 11.5-point favourites when they visited Portland earlier this season with a fully available squad.

Two important names carry probable tags on Indiana's injury report: Caitlin Clark and centre Aliyah Boston. Clark leads the Fever in assists per game and is the team's highest-usage player, while Boston is the third-leading scorer and top rebounder. Both are expected to play, but their injury tags have led to speculation that the market is pricing in the possibility of a late withdrawal.

Clark's numbers against Portland this season are notably poor. In Indiana's 100-84 loss to the Fire, she managed just six points on 1-for-7 shooting in a season-low 21 minutes and 45 seconds. She missed the Fever's 90-73 blowout win over Portland in the other meeting. That mixed history makes Friday's matchup difficult to read from a betting perspective.

Portland will be without sharpshooting guard Sarah Ashlee Barker, who is ruled out with an injury. Her absence is significant: she is shooting 50.2% from the field and 40.0% from three-point range, and she holds the second-highest on/off net rating on the team at plus-7.0. The Fire also have the third-highest three-point attempt rate in the WNBA, meaning their perimeter game could suffer without her.

Portland's biggest weakness, though, is on the glass. The Fire have the worst defensive rebounding rate in the league, while the Fever hold a better rebounding rate on both ends of the floor. In a game expected to be decided by possessions, that edge could prove decisive.

There is also a case that Indiana's backcourt depth is being overlooked. All-Star guard Kelsey Mitchell averages a team-best 23.5 points per game, and if Clark or Boston were to be scratched, her usage would almost certainly rise. Analysts argue that Mitchell's consistency makes the Fever a dangerous team even when their biggest names are not at full capacity.

Away from the basketball itself, Friday's game has been branded Sophie Night in some quarters, a reference to Indiana backup shooting guard Sophie Cunningham's recent comments about biological males competing in women's sport. Reports suggest there will be rival demonstrations outside the arena, with activists from both sides of the debate expected to make their presence felt.

One prominent betting analyst covering the game said he would be focused on the action on court rather than the protests, and described the Fever as undervalued given Portland's recent form and injuries. He noted that the market may be overreacting to Clark's poor previous outing against the Fire, while underestimating the impact of Barker's absence and the Fever's rebounding advantage.

The game tips off at 10:00 p.m. ET on Friday night at the Moda Center in Portland.
