Volvo XC90 T8 PHEV Gets 73-Mile Electric Range for 2028
Volvo has significantly upgraded its plug-in hybrid XC90 for 2028, more than doubling its electric-only range to 73 miles and improving acceleration.

Volvo has unveiled the 2028 XC90 T8 plug-in hybrid, which now offers a substantially improved electric-only driving range. The updated model can travel 73 miles on electric power alone, an increase of 40 miles over the previous version. This makes it one of the most capable plug-in hybrids on the market for zero-emission driving.
The Swedish manufacturer has also enhanced the vehicle's performance. The new XC90 T8 can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds, a slight improvement over its predecessor. This combination of greater electric range and quicker acceleration reflects Volvo's ongoing commitment to electrifying its lineup while maintaining the performance expected from its flagship SUV.
The 2028 XC90 is part of a broader update to Volvo's plug-in hybrid offerings. The XC60, Volvo's best-selling model, also receives a new plug-in hybrid powertrain for the same model year. Both vehicles now boast over 70 miles of electric range, with the XC60 achieving up to 124 miles in some configurations and the XC90 reaching 99 miles in others, depending on the testing cycle. These figures represent a massive boost compared to previous generations, positioning Volvo's PHEVs as leaders in the segment.
This development is significant for British buyers considering the transition to electric vehicles but who may still have concerns about charging infrastructure. With over 70 miles of electric range, many daily commutes and local journeys can be completed entirely on battery power, reducing reliance on petrol. The improved acceleration also ensures that the driving experience remains engaging.
Volvo has not yet announced pricing or a precise on-sale date for the UK market, but the 2028 model year updates are expected to arrive in showrooms next year. The enhancements to the XC90 and XC60 plug-in hybrids underscore Volvo's strategy of offering practical electrified options as it moves toward a fully electric future.
