A white 1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am combining a high-displacement V8 with low mileage is being offered for sale, reflecting renewed interest in late-Malaise-era performance cars.

A pristine white 1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am has been listed for sale with just 21,956 miles on the odometer, offering collectors an unusual combination of high displacement and low mileage from one of the most recognisable performance cars of the late 1970s.
The model years around 1979 are often regarded as a high point of the so-called Malaise era, when tightening emissions rules and rising insurance costs pushed American manufacturers to reduce power output across their lineups. The Trans Am nonetheless retained a muscular identity, with bold styling, a prominent hood and a large V8 that set it apart from more modest models of the period. Cars that have spent most of their lives in low-mileage condition are comparatively rare, which is what makes this example stand out to buyers.
Early reports note that the price of the car is the main question for prospective buyers, and the listing itself has drawn attention for its condition as much as its mileage. Owners and dealers in the classic market generally weigh originality, documentation and mechanical condition alongside odometer readings when valuing cars from this generation, so the combination of a clean appearance and limited use is likely to influence any final figure.
A separate listing for a 1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am offers a useful point of comparison for the segment. That car is a Special Edition example first delivered to Delta Pontiac-GMC Truck of Stockton, California, and it is said to have remained registered in the state through its recent sale. It shows about 73,000 miles, and it has been refurbished under previous ownership with a black repaint, gold striping and Firebird hood graphics, along with black vinyl seat upholstery featuring aftermarket embroidery.
Power in that car comes from a 403ci V8 paired with a three-speed automatic transmission and a Safe-T-Track limited-slip differential. The listing describes an MSD ignition module, removable T-top roof panels, front and rear spoilers, slotted and cross-drilled front brake rotors, Hotchkis Performance sway bars and tie rod sleeves, aftermarket 17-inch snowflake-style wheels, power windows and door locks, and a Kenwood stereo with Bluetooth connectivity. The seller states that the radiator, alternator, fuel pump, fuel filter and valve cover gaskets were replaced in May 2024, and that the oil and battery were changed in October 2026. The listing also notes that the air conditioning does not blow cold.
Factory specifications for the 403 V8 call for a four-barrel carburetor and 185 horsepower with 320 lb-ft of torque when new. The comparison car also carries a K&N air filter, and its five-digit odometer shows roughly 250 miles driven under its current ownership. Taken together, the two listings illustrate how much variation exists within the same model year, from factory-original, lightly used examples to heavily modified cars.
