A rare 1974 BMW 2002 Turbo, one of 1,672 cars produced over its two years of manufacture, is currently for sale in the United States. The car was originally delivered new to Italy, underwent restoration in the Netherlands around 2019, and was later imported to the US. The vehicle is offered on consignment as part of the DriverSource Oktmotorfest 2026 collection and comes with a BMW Classic certificate, factory documentation, recent maintenance records, and a clean Texas state title.

The car is painted in Chamonix, which the factory designated as code 085, and features black Skai vinyl upholstery. Under the hood is a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four M10 engine with a four-speed manual gearbox and a limited-slip differential. Equipment includes a manually operated sunroof, the body kit specific to the Turbo, 13-inch Alpina wheels with Maxxis 185/75 tires, front disc and rear drum brakes, front sport seats, a rear bench seat, and a Blaupunkt AM/FM radio. During restoration the glass, chrome trim, and rubber seals were also replaced; the rear bumper remains chrome, and the exhaust system has a single outlet.

The 2002 Turbo debuted at the 1973 Frankfurt Motor Show and was BMW's first production car with turbocharging. It was distinguished from the standard 2002 by its signature body kit: a front air dam spoiler, wider body-colored wheel arches, and a rear spoiler. The 'turbo 2002' lettering on the nose was applied in mirror image so it would read correctly in the rearview mirror of the car ahead.

The chassis was based on the design of the 2002tii of the time but featured a 20-millimeter front anti-roll bar and special rear springs for the Turbo. The car is fitted with Bilstein shock absorbers, reinforced control arms, rear hub bearings, and axle shafts. Brakes are front discs and rear drums. According to the seller, the braking system was rebuilt, and new springs, bearings, and shock absorbers were installed during restoration.

The engine uses Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection and was equipped at the factory with a Kühnle, Kopp, & Kausch turbocharger, 6.9:1 compression pistons, and an additional oil cooler. According to the seller, the engine was rebuilt during restoration, and in October 2024 the MFI pump was repaired, the warm-up regulator was restored, and the spark plugs and turn signal relay were replaced. The engine number 4290236 matches the chassis number. Compression test results are available in the listing gallery.

The interior features sport front seats and a rear bench seat upholstered in black Skai vinyl, with color-matched dashboard, door panels, and floor mats. The speedometer is calibrated to 240 km/h, the tachometer has a red zone starting at 6,400 rpm, and auxiliary gauges show fuel level and coolant temperature. An analog clock and a boost gauge are located in the center of the dashboard. The odometer was reset to zero during restoration and now reads 500 kilometers (about 311 miles).

The transmission is a four-speed manual, and according to the seller it was rebuilt, while the axle shafts were repaired and powder coated. The BMW Classic certificate confirms the factory colors and the assembly date of March 12, 1974. The offering is part of the DriverSource Oktmotorfest 2026 collection, and under the sale terms the car is sold through dealer consignment.
