Musk claims Tesla Robotaxi beat Waymo in Austin, but Waymo still drives far more

Elon Musk says Tesla's Robotaxi service has won its race with Waymo after logging more driverless miles in Austin in one week, though Waymo still covers about seven times as many driverless miles across the United States.

Elon Musk has declared that Tesla's Robotaxi race against Waymo "was never a real contest", after Tesla's driverless fleet logged 438,000 miles in Austin in a single week. That total edged past Waymo's average of 406,000 weekly miles in the same city. Across the United States, however, Waymo still drives roughly seven times more driverless miles than Tesla every week, a gap that the Austin figure does not close.

The comparison is narrower than the headline claim suggests. It covers one city and one week, and it sets Tesla's latest figure against a Waymo benchmark that is about four months old. Waymo's Austin average is therefore a historical reference rather than a measure of its current pace there, and the two companies' national totals are the more complete picture of their operations.

The episode highlights how driverless taxi companies are increasingly competing on mileage figures, a metric that can be selected and framed to favour one side. For Tesla, a city-level weekly lead offers a clear public win while the company works to scale its service beyond Austin. For Waymo, which has operated driverless services for longer, the national lead provides a far broader base of real-world operating data, spread across a much larger footprint than a single city.

Musk's remark places the two firms in direct comparison, but the figures available so far show different strengths. Tesla holds the local lead in Austin for the week in question, while Waymo continues to lead across the country by a wide margin. Whether Tesla can sustain its Austin pace as it expands, and whether Waymo's national lead widens or narrows as both fleets grow, will be the measures to watch in the months ahead.
